Festivals of Goa


Goa is small state .There are many festivals are performed in Goa.

Tripurari Purnima:-

This celebration take place at the end of Diwali festival season. According to mythological legend lord Krishna defeated and killed the Demon Tripura.

sanquelim has the tradition of releasing lamps in the river during this festival, the ship building competition i.e.  making of miniature models boats and ship made out of thermocol and other materials has become the main highlight of the festival celebration.
The festivities take place at vithalapur in sanqulem, near the pundalik Temple. Beside the main boat competition, there are other cultural programmes. As the competition progresses the competitors boat is awarded by the organiser of festival.

Carnival is the most famous festival in the state of Goa and has been celebrated since the 18th century as a precursor to the abstinence of lent . The carnival is exclusive and unique to Goa, and was introduced by the Portuguese who ruled over Goa for over five hundred years.

The original word carnival is derived from a Latin word meaning to take away meat and is an expression of the 40- day period of fasting of lent, during which abstinence from meat is a rule.

The carnival is not celebrated anywhere else in India and was in decline even in Goa in the last few years of Portuguese rule .Its revival with the liberation of Goa, and a boost to its tourism was therefore welcome. From being almost on the brink of decline, this three day festival of gay abandon and riotous revelry now attracts thousands of tourist to Goa from all over India every year.

The origins and nature of the carnival can be traced to the hedonistic feasts of ancient Rome and Greece. These carnival started in the Spanish and Portuguese colonies, and gradually became known for their singing, dancing and drinking . The carnival is presided over by king Memo, who on the opening day orders his subjects to party.
The carnival is held in February for three days and night, is primarily celebrated by Christians.

Shigmo festival in Goa:-

Shigmo parade is a street festival filled with colours, music, dances and float parade. The life of Goan  is depicted in elaborated folk performance by local men and women who dance tirelessly in huge processions along with the parade. people in Goa drees up in colored outfits, holding                     multi colored flags and playing  large musical instruments like the Dhol Tasha and flutes in processions across the cities . The mesmerizing large-than-life celebration brings fantasy and folk to from a fusion in the floats what parade through the streets.

Temples of goa

Lairai temple, shirgao:-

In the  village of Shirgao in Bicholim taluk lies the temple of Goddess Lairai. The  temple of  shri lairai is located at a distance of 2kms from the  village  Assonora. The  deity lairai  is famous  all over  Goa for the  Shirgao Zatra. Every year  thousands of  devotees  attend  annual  feast of  deity to  witness the  walking  of devotees  of deity,  known as" Dhond" barefooted through the sacred fire known as Homkunda. A mud Road leads to  the temple and passes through many iron ore mines along the way.
The  Shirgao Zatra takes place in  early part of may. The  festival  begins early in the  morning and  continues throughout  till down. The  devotees Dhond take a bath and  walk all the way uphill to the  temple to  worship the Goddess. Late into the night, as midnight approaches, the devotees perform a frantic dance inside the temple, which is all lit up for the occasion. Next a fire is made using a huge pile  of  wood  kept in  a large  clearing near the temple.
The  final and most spectacular part of the  Zatra then be gains. In the  early hours of the morning when the  fire has died down, the raking of the  coals begins. The devotees await their turn to  walk on the  holy path of  hot coal. A round 4am,the actual  ritual starts, with the devotees  running  through the hot coals carrying  their sticks  with the name of Devi Lairai. It is said that the  fire does no harm to just devotees who walk calmly through the  embers. The unjust are said to  hurry through running through the burning coals.

Mangueshi temple:-








Mangueshi temple is located about 21km from  Panaji, the Mangueshi temple stands tall amidst the  Hindu temple of Goa. The  Mangueshi  temple was originally  located at  just as kushasthali {present day cortalim } with the  threat of  persecution looming, the  linear was transferred from the  original  temple to the  present location  at prior. Mangueshi  is an incarnation of  Lord  Shiva and the shivering inside the  fluorite designed  sanctum is flanked by dwarf alas guards.

The temple is mordan piece of  architecture  blended with traditional  Hindu patter. The  entrance to the temple  bears an image, which  words off everything  impure from the inner  precincts of the  temple and  maintain its sanctity. Festival  and  periodical devotional activities are conducted  with   great  zeal. Monday  is the  weekly  festival. On this  day the Lord.Murti is taken out,  before  traditional  at night , in a procession in palatial accompanied by  music. The  annual  festival  are Navratilova,  megha Purnima festival  Jatrotsav and  Mahashivratri.

Goan staple food and drinks

Goan is small  state. The  capital of  GOA is  Panaji. There are different  religious  people  are staying  in  goa .The  staple food of goa is fish curry and  rice.

This is the  staple  food  of goals and known as  xitt Coddi in Montana. The  curry is usually  yellowish  red in colour  due to the  presence of  chillies  and turmeric  powder. The tangy and spicy dish can be cooked with a  variety of  fish, although  mackerel is one of the favourite. The  dish is  served  with  steamed  white  rice and  is the traditional  goan meal.

White, fully  bread that is made of  coconut  and finely ground rice flour is mixed with  toddy, which is then fermented and  steamed. There  are  usually  served  at  special  occasions and  can be  eaten  with  curries or chtani.

This is goals local  alcoholic  drink with strong  aroma. The  word Feni derives from the word Feni,  which  means  froth. In  fact a good  Feni,  which is an indication of the superior quality of the  product. There are two types of Feni, one  is made from coconut  and other is made from cashew. Goan flok dances

Goan flok dances bear a tradition of thousand of year, characterised by innumerable forms performed by and reflective lifestyles culture and aspirations of different state, religious and castes of goan society.
Dhalo:-











Quepem is one of goas still green talukas.This region is known for one of its orgional dance form of the Dalo.This dance is performed by the women. It is a reflection of the regenrative ability of the earth. The "tulas", a help of mud,that is keptand wirshipped,is symbol of our (mother) earth
The women stand in two rows, facing each other. Each row is called "fanti".Before the Dhalo begain, women place a brass lamp on a plank.The lamp is then lit in front of tulsi vrindavan,which seen when the Hindu s dance the Dhalo is notably absent. There song tolk of in-low marriage s and a visual description of these event s are shown.The right arm of  one women hold the waist of the women standing next to her ,while the left free.As each row will towards the other,their paths collide,at this juncture, the dancers bow down in a symbolic solution to the earth goodness .The blowing down is called as" naman".Men can not take part in this dances, with the exception of one man, who is allowed and is known as"bandhav".In this  group one is the "brother" who is said to be "Ramba" brother and only the brother, has the right and authority to come at maand and great blessings.
The dress of the velips and Christian s while dancing the Dhalo is similar. The Dhalo is a way of showing a heart felling with gratitude to mother Earth,for the produce it gives which helps feed the people and their livestock.

Go as cultural heritage was enriched by a slow but persistent process of absorption and assimilation of the more congenial feature s of alien culture.The culture of the Goan people is also influence by the Goans cuisine .The culture of the Goans is a blend of their people,music and dances. The Goan customs and traditions are easily adaptable because of their lifestyle. The Goan culture is so unique.
